Small-Business Mentoring in South Africa Practical Guidance & Support
Running a small business can be challenging. Sometimes you don’t need another course or another generic answer. You need an independent person to help you think through your situation.
Let’s work together to understand your challenge, evaluate your options and identify practical next steps.

You Don’t Have to Work Through Every Business Decision Alone
Whether you’re starting a business or managing an existing one, important decisions can be difficult without someone independent to discuss them with.
Too Many Questions
You have a business idea but are unsure about its viability, customers, costs or where to begin.
Difficult Decisions
You need to make choices about pricing, marketing, operations or growth, but the best option isn’t obvious.
Not Enough Clarity
You have plenty of information and advice but struggle to identify what matters most and what to do next.
Sometimes a focused conversation is the most useful place to begin.
Understand. Decide. Act.
Good decisions begin with understanding the real problem, examining realistic options and identifying actions you can take.
Understand the Problem
What are you trying to achieve? What’s holding you back? Which assumptions need closer examination?
Make a Better Decision
We explore alternatives, risks, constraints and opportunities relevant to your circumstances.
Take Practical Action
We identify up to three achievable next steps so you have a clearer way forward.
Start Small. Build What Works.
Mentoring for South African Entrepreneurs
Especially useful for people building or managing a business without a large team of advisers.
Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Explore an idea’s practical requirements, opportunities and first steps before making a major commitment.
New Business Owners
Work through priorities, customers, costs, pricing and day-to-day operations.
Established Small Businesses
Get an independent perspective on a challenge, important decision or new opportunity.
What Can We Work Through Together?
Bring a particular issue that needs attention. The conversation is tailored to your circumstances, not a generic training programme.
A 30-minute session works best when we focus on one main question. Extensive research or planning can be scoped separately.
The Person Behind How To Books ZA
Douw Steyn
I’m the founder of How To Books ZA, an organisational development practitioner, entrepreneur and business author. My academic background includes a BBA and BCom (Hons).
Through H2BZA, I research and develop practical business guides, articles and resources for South Africans who want to start, manage and grow businesses.
My mentoring approach is straightforward. I listen carefully, ask questions, challenge assumptions where necessary and help you consider practical ways forward.
I believe useful business guidance should be realistic, understandable and relevant to your own situation.
